Introduction

The desire to write this book has been on my heart for thirty years. You may wonder why I waited so long. I think I was waiting for my children to be sure of their faith. I also did not have a nudge from the Lord to write this until now. God spoke to me around Christmas that it was time to start writing the book. He told me to write a devotional each day. It was a big commitment to come  to the Lord and ask him what to write each day. God really helped me to be faithful in this. My husband also gets a big praise since he fixed me breakfast in bed every day so I could do it!  God taught me to pray in a special way. I want to share this with mothers and fathers everywhere.

Many young mothers and fathers go to parenting classes and seminars as my husband and I did. All of that is fine. We need to learn good parenting skills; however, we must depend on God’s faithfulness and goodness, and not on our parenting abilities alone.  I am convinced that we can never parent perfectly enough or love perfectly enough for our children to become wholehearted followers of Jesus. This, I hope is the goal: not to simply have “good” children but to have godly children. The enemy can take any little thing and turn our children into rebels. The only answer is to use God’s Word to pray with power for our children. And we should keep asking until we have the assurance that those prayers have been heard and will be answered: “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.” (Matthew 7:7)

Once, when I was a young parent, I spoke with an older godly woman who loved the Lord. I began to share with her my heart’s desire to raise my children to be an army for the Lord. She replied bitterly, “You should not expect your children will even grow up to follow the Lord.” She had been very disappointed and had not found her children following after God and she thought that I could not expect my children to follow the Lord either.  After this conversation, I went to the Lord and said, “Is this true, Lord? Does this woman’s prophecy of doom have to apply to my children as well?” He led me to the Scriptures. The Lord told me to find the promises in the Bible that apply to our children and use these Scriptures to pray for my children and ask God to work in their hearts. As James says, “You do not have, because you do not ask.” (James 4:2b). We can guarantee our children will follow the Lord if we find assurance of faith in the Scripture. I would like to help you to claim the promises of God for your children as I have done with mine. Many children from Christian families don’t follow the Lord. It is sad this often is the case, but it does not have to be this way. We can ask God to do a miracle in our family line.

When I began to pray, I had no faith for my family; but as I went on praying putting my hope in the promises of God, my faith increased and one day I knew God had answered my prayers. My children were still young and not all of them were born, but I knew God would do it.

Some of your children might be older — it is better to start late than never. God can still answer “late” prayers. You might want to pray for your grandchildren, go right ahead! This book includes prayers for grandchildren, as I have begun to pray for mine as well. You might want to pray for your spiritual children. You can take these prayers and apply it to them too.

I went back to my old journals in writing this devotional. It has been an amazing adventure seeing how many of those prayers have been answered already. I wish to share this joy with you so I am going to take you through the way I prayed and use some of the actual prayers from my journals. I want you to pray them with me if you agree with the prayers. Take my prayers and apply them to your own children and grandchildren.

I see this book as putting money in the bank for our descendants. It’s like storing up treasure in their accounts. It’s like giving them a spiritual inheritance.

In this book I pray for our children, our family, and our descendants. I want you to personalize it for yourself. I want you to be praying with me for your family and descendants too. It’s like we are all praying together for all our children and grandchildren. Pray in agreement with me and with your husband or wife. You could pray with your children using this book as a daily family devotional, letting your children hear you pray the prayers in this book for them.

I believe many of you need hope. Why are we able to hope? It is because we are serving a mighty and amazing God. “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.” (Romans 15:13)

Pray With Me

“We hope because you, our Father,  are good, kind, loving, merciful and forgiving. We hope because your character is perfect and trustworthy and because you are faithful. Hope must have an object and you are that object. We hope in you. We hope that you will take care of us and you have promised to do that. We hope that our children and grandchildren will love you and we believe you have promised that also. What a good God we serve. You are big enough to do it. We believe you have the power to change circumstances and bring about both your will and our hopes together.”

May all those who have joined us to pray have an encouraging and hopeful new year. I hope that as you pray the scriptures your faith will increase and you will see God’s promises to you more clearly.
